How to Factory Reset Any MSI Claw

Do not assume every game supports cloud saves. Check important titles individually before erasing the device.

Microsoft recommends backing up important files and making sure the BitLocker recovery key is available before using Windows recovery tools. A BitLocker key is a 48-digit recovery code and may be stored in the Microsoft account linked to the device.

When this method works

MSI states that its factory recovery procedure applies to MSI Claw handhelds shipped with a factory-installed Windows operating system.

It does not apply when:

• The handheld was sold as a FreeDOS model without Windows
• Windows was manually reinstalled and the MSI recovery image was removed
• The system drive was already wiped or replaced without cloning the factory partitions
• The recovery partition is damaged or unavailable

In those cases, use MSI's Windows installation procedure and the support downloads for the exact model instead of forcing the factory-recovery path.

How to enter MSI Recovery

1. 1Save your work and fully restart the MSI Claw.

1. 1Watch for the MSI logo during startup.

1. 1When the MSI logo appears, press and hold LB and LT together.

1. 1Keep holding the controls until the handheld enters the Windows Recovery Environment, also called WinRE.

If Windows starts normally, restart and try the shortcut again. Begin holding LB+LT as the MSI logo appears rather than waiting for the Windows sign-in screen.

Start the factory restore

Inside the Windows Recovery Environment:

1. 1Select Restore MSI factory settings.

1. 1Choose System Partition Recovery.

1. 1Read the on-screen warning carefully and continue only after confirming that the backup is complete.

1. 1Follow the recovery prompts without disconnecting power or forcing a restart.

1. 1Wait for the completion message. MSI's instructions identify the successful finish screen as “Windows recovery is successful.”

1. 1Select OK and allow the device to restart.

Do not power off the handheld during recovery. Interrupting a system-image restore can leave Windows unable to boot.

What the restore changes

The procedure returns the system partition to MSI's original factory image. That means:

• Personal files stored on the restored system partition are erased
• Installed games and applications are removed
• Windows settings and local accounts are reset
• Driver and utility versions return to those included in the factory image
• MSI Center M and other factory-installed MSI software are restored
• Windows initial setup runs again on the next boot

A factory restore is different from a Windows restore point. It is also different from reinstalling Windows with generic installation media. The MSI method restores the manufacturer's software image, while a clean Windows installation may require drivers and MSI utilities to be installed separately.

After the first boot

Complete Windows setup, then rebuild the handheld in a controlled order:

1. 1Run Windows Update until no further required updates are offered. Restart when requested and check again.

1. 1Open MSI Center M and install the updates offered for the exact Claw model.

1. 1Visit MSI Support for the device and compare BIOS, firmware and driver versions before installing anything manually.

1. 1Sign back into game launchers and let cloud synchronization finish before launching an important save.

1. 1Reinstall games and applications gradually. Test stability before restoring every optional utility or customization.

1. 1Reapply manual TDP, fan, controller, display and performance settings only after the device is stable.

Do not restore every old tweak immediately. If the original problem was caused by software, adding all previous utilities and settings at once can bring the same problem straight back like a particularly tedious miniboss.

If LB+LT does not open recovery

First confirm the timing: restart, wait for the MSI logo, then hold LB+LT.

If the shortcut repeatedly fails and Windows still boots:

• Check whether the system drive or Windows installation was previously replaced
• Check Disk Management only to confirm whether recovery partitions are present; do not delete or resize them
• Use Windows recovery options for non-destructive troubleshooting where appropriate
• Contact MSI Support with the exact model and serial information

If the system drive was wiped or the factory image is missing, stop repeating the shortcut. Follow MSI's Windows installation guide for FreeDOS or manually reinstalled systems.

When to use a less destructive option

A factory restore should not be the first response to every crash or slow game.

Try narrower fixes first when the issue affects only one title or began after one update:

• Verify the game's files
• Remove a broken graphics shader cache
• Roll back or reinstall the affected driver using the manufacturer's procedure
• Disable a recently added overlay or tuning utility
• Test Windows Safe Mode or Startup Repair for boot problems
• Use System Restore when a suitable restore point exists

Use factory recovery when the operating system is broadly unstable, ordinary repairs have failed or the handheld must be completely wiped.

The practical checklist

Before recovery: • Back up files and unsynced saves • Verify cloud-save status • Store the BitLocker recovery key • Connect AC power • Confirm the factory MSI Windows image is still present

Recovery path: • Restart • Hold LB+LT at the MSI logo • Troubleshoot • Restore MSI factory settings • System Partition Recovery • Follow the prompts and do not interrupt power

After recovery: • Complete Windows setup • Install Windows and MSI updates • Restore accounts and saves carefully • Reinstall software in stages • Test stability before reapplying tweaks
