How to Update a Windows Handheld Without Breaking Drivers

Do not store the only copy on the handheld you are about to update.

Create a restore point

System Restore can roll Windows system files, registry settings, installed programs and drivers back to an earlier state without removing personal files.

Search Windows for Create a restore point, select the system drive, enable System Protection if necessary, then create a restore point with a useful name and date.

A restore point is useful for Windows and driver problems. It does not replace a full backup and should not be treated as a BIOS rollback tool.

Check the exact model

Similar-looking handhelds can use different firmware. Confirm the full model in the manufacturer's utility or on the support page before downloading anything manually.

Examples include the original ROG Ally and Ally X, different Legion Go generations, and Intel- or AMD-based MSI Claw models. Never install a BIOS simply because the product family name looks close.

The safest update order

1. Finish current work

Close games, launchers, monitoring tools and tuning utilities. Save any custom fan curves, TDP profiles or controller mappings that would be difficult to recreate.

2. Install regular Windows updates

Open Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. Install the normal security and quality updates offered to the device, then restart when Windows requests it.

Do not start an OEM BIOS update while Windows is already waiting for a restart. Complete the Windows restart first and sign back in.

3. Update the manufacturer's utility

Update Armoury Crate SE, Legion Space or MSI Center M before asking it to install newer device firmware. Manufacturers sometimes require a particular utility version before a BIOS package becomes available or can be installed safely.

4. Install OEM device updates

Use the official utility for your handheld:

ROG Ally and ROG Xbox Ally

Open Armoury Crate SE, go to Settings and select Update Center. Install the listed essential updates. ASUS uses this path for important handheld software and driver packages.

Lenovo Legion Go

Open Legion Space, enter Settings and use the driver update page to check for updates. Lenovo also publishes model-specific drivers and BIOS packages on its support site.

MSI Claw

Open MSI Center M, go to News and Updates or Live Update, then scan for available drivers and BIOS firmware. MSI notes that some Claw updates depend on a minimum MSI Center M or BIOS version, so read the notes shown for your exact model.

5. Restart and check again

After a major driver, controller firmware or system-component update, restart before installing the next major layer. Reopen the OEM utility and check whether another prerequisite or follow-up package appears.

6. Install BIOS firmware last

Read the release notes and prerequisite versions first. Keep the charger connected, use a stable network when the package is delivered through an online utility and do not close the updater, force a shutdown or hold the power button during the firmware write.

The screen may go dark, the fans may change speed and the handheld may restart more than once. Leave it alone unless the manufacturer's instructions explicitly say otherwise.

Why not install every optional driver?

Windows Update may offer optional drivers, and component vendors may publish newer generic packages. Newer does not automatically mean better for a handheld.

The OEM package may include model-specific power management, controller integration, display behaviour or compatibility work that a generic installer does not understand. Start with the update path documented by the handheld manufacturer. Use a manual component driver only when its documentation supports your exact device or you are solving a known problem with a recovery path prepared.

How to verify the update

Do not judge success only by the installer reaching 100 percent.

After the final restart:

• Open the OEM utility and confirm there are no pending essential updates
• Check that the controller, Command Center button and quick settings work
• Confirm Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, audio, brightness and sleep or resume
• Open Device Manager and look for warning icons
• Check the BIOS version against the version shown by the official support page
• Launch one familiar game with the same resolution, TDP and graphics settings used before the update
• Watch frametime behaviour and temperatures instead of comparing only one FPS number

If performance changes, record the driver and BIOS versions before changing additional settings.

If something goes wrong

Windows update failure

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter, restart and check Update history for the failed package. Do not repeatedly force the same update without reading its error.

Driver or utility problem

If Windows still starts, use System Restore or the manufacturer's recovery instructions. A restore point can undo recent system and driver changes, but it is not a guarantee for firmware stored outside Windows.

BitLocker recovery screen

Use the recovery-key ID displayed on the handheld to select the correct saved key. If the key is not available, Microsoft states that support cannot retrieve or recreate it.

BIOS update appears frozen

Do not immediately force a shutdown. Firmware updates can remain on a blank screen or progress stage for longer than a normal reboot. Follow the time and recovery guidance for the exact model. If the manufacturer provides no recovery procedure and the device remains unresponsive, contact its support before attempting another firmware package.

The practical rule

Treat updates as a controlled maintenance job:

• Prepare power, backups and the BitLocker key
• Finish Windows Update and restart
• Update the OEM utility
• Install model-specific drivers and firmware
• Restart between major stages
• Update BIOS only after checking prerequisites
• Verify controls, connectivity and one repeatable game test

This takes longer than pressing every Update button at once, but it gives you a clear recovery point and makes any regression much easier to identify.
