Valve released a Steam Beta Client update on September 18, 2026, with a set of Steam Input changes aimed at making complex controller layouts easier to understand and edit.
The update is available only in the Preview and Beta channels. It has not been released to Stable, so players who depend on a predictable travel or couch-gaming setup should not switch channels solely for these tools without testing their layouts first.
For games that use the Steam Input API, the configurator can now show a list of game actions and their assigned controls instead of making users work backwards from each physical input.
That distinction matters for games with large action sets or community layouts. Looking up “Jump,” “Map,” or “Weapon Wheel” and seeing its current binding is often faster than opening every button to discover what it does.
Valve also describes the binding interface as streamlined. The changelog does not claim that existing layouts are automatically improved, and HandheldAtlas has not treated the change as a compatibility fix for every controller profile.
A new multi-binding page lets users build button combinations while viewing a timeline of command outputs and related settings.
This should make advanced layouts easier to reason about. A single control can trigger different commands based on timing or combinations, but those relationships can be difficult to audit when they are spread across separate menus. The timeline gives players a clearer representation before they rely on the layout in-game.
The beta also adds support for inverting button-chord bindings. This expands how modifier-style combinations can be authored, but users should check any important custom layout after updating rather than assuming its behavior is unchanged.
Valve fixed older unnamed Virtual Menus appearing as “Create Virtual Menu” in some configurator views. The update also fixes EULA acceptance when starting a Remote Play stream.
SteamRT3 Experimental Beta receives a Night Mode fix. That item applies specifically to the experimental SteamRT3 environment and should not be presented as a general Steam Deck display or SteamOS night-mode change.
The practical benefit is layout authoring, not higher frame rates. Players who build keyboard-heavy profiles, radial menus or layered button combinations now have better tools for seeing what each action does and when a multi-binding fires.
Valve did not publish game benchmarks, frame-time captures, battery tests or power measurements with this client update. HandheldAtlas is not assigning an FPS change, battery-life improvement, recommended TDP or graphics preset to it.
This is a useful beta for players who actively create or troubleshoot Steam Input layouts. The new action-first view and visual multi-binding editor address real configuration friction, while most users with working layouts can wait for the changes to reach Stable.
