Update — October 24, 2026: Valve released SteamOS 3.9.5 to the stable channel on October 23. The report below describes the earlier October 21 beta. Valve released SteamOS 3.9.4 Beta on October 21, 2026. It is available through the Beta and Preview channels, not the stable channel.
The update fixes a regression that could leave games such as A Plague Tale: Innocence running behind Steam's loading screen. It also restores correct screenshot resolution when the game and display run above 720p. A timezone change should no longer block Desktop Mode until a reboot, and Valve reports fewer clicks through the 3.5mm audio output with sensitive headphones or speakers.
One limitation remains important: hibernation is temporarily disabled on Steam Deck because of outstanding driver bugs. Do not read the broader SteamOS 3.9 hibernation work as an available Deck feature.
Should you switch channels?
For players already testing 3.9, these are targeted usability fixes. If you prefer the stable release, this announcement is not a reason to expect the same changes there immediately. The channel selector is under Settings > System > System Update Channel.
