Valve has released its September 1 Steam Client update to the Stable channel, bringing several practical changes to Steam Deck users rather than experimental SteamOS platform work.
The most notable handheld-specific addition is HDR streaming support for Steam Deck OLED through Remote Play. Valve has also changed Steam shutdown behaviour to wait for recently closed games to finish synchronizing saves with Steam Cloud.
Steam now waits for a game that has just exited to complete its cloud synchronization before the client shuts down.
This reduces the risk of closing Steam too quickly after leaving a game and interrupting an upload. It does not guarantee that every save is safely stored in the cloud: users should still watch for synchronization errors, avoid forcing the device off and confirm that Steam reports the game as up to date before switching devices.
Valve does not publish a new retry policy, timeout or reliability percentage in the notes, so HandheldAtlas is not assigning a measurable improvement to save safety.
Remote Play now supports HDR streaming on Steam Deck OLED. The LCD Steam Deck does not have an HDR display, so this particular benefit is tied to the OLED model.
A correct HDR chain still depends on the host PC, game, display settings, network and stream configuration. The changelog confirms support in the Stable client; it does not prove identical colour accuracy, peak brightness or latency across every setup.
The update adds AV1 video streaming when using the experimental SteamRT3 client.
That wording matters. AV1 through SteamRT3 should be treated as an experimental path, not a default recommendation for every Deck owner. Codec availability and practical performance can depend on hardware encode and decode support, host configuration and current client behaviour.
Valve has adjusted the Steam Input configurator to make it clearer when a controller layout is shared with another device or unique to one device.
Users can also split Steam Controller configurations so they are no longer shared with Steam Deck. This is useful when the same game needs different mappings on a Steam Controller and the Deck's built-in controls.
The Stable client now allows users to start changing accounts while a game is running. Steam warns that continuing will close active games.
Valve also added an “Ask which account to use on startup” toggle and removed the extra account-change confirmation in most situations. Choosing another account now opens the account selector and restarts Steam with the selected profile.
The new flow is more direct, but the warning should be taken seriously: close the game normally and confirm that its cloud save has synchronized before proceeding whenever possible.
The release notes do not contain controlled performance, battery-life or latency measurements. HandheldAtlas is therefore leaving FPS, one-percent lows, frametimes, streaming latency, power draw and battery impact unassigned.
HDR Remote Play support is a feature addition, not evidence that every network or host PC can deliver a stable HDR stream. Likewise, the cloud-sync change reduces one avoidable interruption point but does not replace local backups for important saves.
Steam Deck OLED owners gain the headline feature through Stable-channel HDR Remote Play. The cloud-sync wait is arguably the broader improvement because it applies to users moving between systems and helps Steam finish a critical background task before shutdown.
The Steam Input separation option is also valuable for anyone who uses both a Deck and a Steam Controller. Since this is a Stable client update, users do not need to opt into the SteamOS Preview channel to receive these changes.
